NASH Clinical Research Network
The NASH Clinical Research network researches the nature and causes of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The NASH Network is funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and the Digestive and Kidney Disease fund, with eight clinical centers in the U.S. They conduct clinical studies on the prevention and treatment of NASH.
WHAT IS FATTY LIVER DISEASE?
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is also called fatty liver disease. It happens when the liver has a buildup of fat and this injures the liver. Fatty liver disease can lead to cirrhosis (scar tissue), liver damage, or even liver failure. Most people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease experience few or no symptoms. Fatty liver disease is similar to alcoholic liver disease, only it affects people who don’t drink alcohol, or who drink very little alcohol.
HOW IS FATTY LIVER DISEASE LINKED TO OVERWEIGHT?
There has been some research done on fatty liver disease, but nothing conclusive has been found. What research does suggest is that it often affects those who are middle-aged, diabetic, and/or overweight or obese. Studies also suggest that fatty liver disease can also affect children.
HOW CAN WEIGHT LOSS HELP?
Currently, there is not a specific treatment targeting fatty liver disease except for losing weight and eating healthier. Avoiding alcohol can also help with fatty liver disease. Studies have shown losing 5% to 10% of body weight can be effective in combating the effects of fatty liver disease.
