It’s a common myth to think that all body fat is bad. In truth, body fat in moderation is beneficial for protecting the person’s organs, as well as being a reservoir of energy for body functions. To better understand the benefits of body fat, the total weight of body fat can be subdivided into three separate categories:
Weight of “Essential Body Fat” – This body fat is needed to protect the internal organs from bruising damage, and protect the body from infectious diseases.
Weight of “Reserve Body Fat” – This is additional body fat that doesn’t cause medical risks, and provides a fuel reserve for the body.
Weight of “Excess Body Fat” – The amount of body fat that exceeds the combination of reserve body fat and essential body fat. Excess body fat causes the risk of serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and some forms of cancer.
ESSENTIAL BODY FAT
The Futrex body composition analyzer was designed by a group of medical professionals who specialize in the impact of body fat on human health. Futrex asked these medical professionals their opinion on a minimum body fat percentage to remain healthy. The following is what they responded with:
- Males need a minimum of 6% body fat
- Females need a minimum of 9% body fat
Note: The minimum percent body fat is higher for females than for males because of reproduction needs as well as other bodily functions.
These medical professionals also noted that any body fat percentages lower than those listed above would put the body at risk for bacterial and viral diseases, while failing to provide the body with insulation against temperature extremes and protection for the internal organs against bruising.
Essential body fat is stored by the body in two ways:
Directly under the skin – This is called subcutaneous fat. This fat layer provides bruise protection and thermal protection.
Inside the muscle – This is called intramuscular fat. This fat provides the “fuel” source for the body and protects organs from shock forces.
Inside the muscle – This is called intramuscular fat. This fat provides the “fuel” source for the body and protects organs from shock forces.
RESERVE BODY FAT
Many studies reinforce the concept of minimum body fat levels required before one is at risk for health problems. Many of these studies were performed at the Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, and by the National Institute of Health’s Framingham Studies.
These studies widely agree that the maximum amount of allowable reserve body fat depends on a person’s age, height, and gender. This is why we at the Oklahoma Men’s Clinic use technology provided by Futrex to determine the best body fat percentage for each individual.
If your fat levels are in excess of what is needed to protect or fuel your body, you have gained weight and can even be considered obese. Research conducted by the NIH research shows that not only are health risks associated with excess body fat, but the level of risk increases with the body fat percentage.
EXCESS BODY FAT
So what happens when your fat levels are far in excess of those needed to protect the body and fuel its basic functions? The answer is weight gain, and ultimately, obesity. Research conducted by the NIH research shows that not only are health risks associated with Excess Body Fat, but the level of risk increases with the body fat percentage.
