Information on Strokes

WHAT IS A STROKE?

When the blood flow is restricted in part of the brain, it is called a stroke. The part of the brain where blood flow stops actually dies. The most common type of stroke is an ischemic stroke, where a blood clot blocks an artery leading to the brain and cuts it off from blood flow. A hemorrhagic stroke is another common type of stroke, and is when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. All of these can cause partial paralysis or full paralysis to one side or all of the body. A big enough stroke can even be fatal.

ARE STROKES LINKED TO OBESITY?

Research shows that obese or overweight individuals tend to have higher blood pressure, which is the leading cause of strokes. Thus, overweight or obese individuals tend to have a higher risk of strokes. Heart disease, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar are also known to cause stroke, and are all health problems associated with being overweight. Being overweight has many negative consequences, including life-threatening ones such as risk of stroke.
