Why You Gain Weight As You Age

Weight gain can be common for men as they age. As the “dad body” has become more accepted and popularized thanks to mainstream culture, many men don’t feel as ashamed of their weight gain as in the past. However, it’s important as an aging man to understand why you might be gaining weight. Gaining a few pounds may not feel like a big deal, but significant weight gain can cause problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, or an increased risk of stroke. Understanding the causes of weight gain that happens when we age is important for finding ways to mitigate and treat this weight gain. At the Oklahoma Men’s Clinic, our physicians look at the following underlying issues to medically treat weight gain in our clients. We’ve found significant success with our weight loss treatments, as we’re looking for the following issues that may be overlooked.

Weight Gain Can Be Caused by Hormonal Imbalance
As men age, their hormone productions significantly decrease. This is due to the body aging and things not working as effectively as they should. This drop in hormone production can cause hormonal imbalance, leading to problems such as weight gain or lack of sleep. The specific hormones that can be causing significant weight gain are testosterone and human growth hormone (HGH). When these get too low, your body is triggered to increase fat production, leading to weight gain.

Weight Gain Can Be Caused by Loss of Energy
We can all agree that we lose some of our energy as we age. It can be harder to exercise or eat healthier as we get older. Losing some of our energy can cause an increase in fat production, as we don’t exercise as much and our body gets out of shape. It’s easy to find ways to regain energy, such as through medication or better diets. This can help mitigate weight gain as well.

If you’re an aging man struggling with significant weight gain, you can learn ways to help treat your weight gain by contacting our specialists at the Oklahoma Men’s Clinic.
