3 Reasons Why Midlife Crises Happen

Midlife crises are famous for aging men. Many jokes are made about middle-aged men trading in their cars for impractical and overpriced sports cars during a midlife crisis. Midlife crises can cause problems for many men with their relationships, family, or jobs. Midlife crises, while sometimes seemingly humorous in nature, have physiological reasons behind them. At the Oklahoma Men’s Clinic, we have helped thousands of men deal with midlife crises, and found successful ways of mitigating them. From our experience and research, we’ve found many underlying issues to midlife crisis. Below are several factors that we believe can be attributed to why midlife crises occur.

Midlife Crises Can Come from Hormonal Imbalances
Hormones are important for many body functions, including libido and sleep. When these hormones become imbalanced, it can cause problems. The hormones testosterone and human growth hormone (HGH) specifically can be troublesome for men, as they lower in level as men age. This then causes a hormonal imbalance which can lead to issues like erectile dysfunction, lack of sleep, weight gain, hair loss, muscle loss, or even a midlife crisis. It’s important to check your hormonal levels to make sure they remain balanced as you age.

Midlife Crises Can Come from Male Depression
Depression can increase in aging males due to hormonal imbalance or other problems such as erectile dysfunction. This depression can lead to confusion or hopelessness for many men. This in turn can lead to a midlife crisis. Depression is very treatable, and it’s important to get help for it to improve daily functions and quality of life.

Midlife Crises Can Come from Stress with Aging
Many people have fear or stress when it comes to the aging process. It can be scary to have a body that doesn’t work as well as it used to, or to experience memory loss. This can lead to many men having a midlife crisis, as they become afraid of aging and losing function or memory. Getting help for this anxiety is important in improving your quality of life.
